It hadn't been long since they'd left that child's fearscape, the one where Leon had been quite badly hurt, but it had become abundantly clear that they would need to "level up" quickly. As a result, the next time they had stopped to rest Damian had proposed to Mako that they train for a bit. Sure, it wouldn't make them level up, only fighting Glitches would do that, but it would help them get a hang of this place.
At that moment he was leading Mako a short distance from the others, leaving Bri behind to look after Leon. They would be out of sight but still close enough that they could close the distance quickly if the need arose. "So, you think we'll need to be worried about these 'Inverse' guys?" He asked Mako, briefly glancing back over his shoulder as he ascended the slope of a low hill. It wasn't so high as to hurt the person if they were knocked down to its base but it was still steep enough to cause the person in question to roll down it if they fell.

"I dunno," she replied, frowning. She drew her katana and frowned at it, testing its weight. She'd gotten it back from Alice in one piece and in good condition, but she hadn't actually had time to practice with it.
"Should be or not, I am worried. I mean, they look just like players or regular NPCs. We can't trust anybody anymore...."
She took a few practice swings with the sword, focused on her thoughts and the way the blade moved. "Normally I'd say we've got nothing to fear, but they're not your typical video game monsters. They're stupidly powerful, you saw that, and they look just like us, which means we can't trust people, like I said. They think and act just like Players... but they're not. If we don't at least unlock our elements soon, there's no way we can beat them, and if we can't beat them...."
She took another swing.
"If we can't beat them, no way are we gonna be able to take out the final boss."

Damian unwrapped the chain from around his wrist, testing its weight. "I know what you mean. If they hadn't just told us I would've just thought they were more players." He said to her and looked up as he heard a distant roar of some unseen creature. "And I think you're right. I'm willing to bet that we're going to have to beat them in order to even get close to that Shade guy." Once he'd finished testing the chain he stepped back to create some distance. "Where do you think they came from anyway?"

She shrugged. "Who knows, who cares? They're the bad guys. Spending a lot of time wondering if they're part of the game, or if they're real people, is only going to be a problem if we end up having to take 'em out. Leon is already adamant about not killing the final boss because what if he's human."
She sighed. "I'd honestly rather not know. We've gotta do what we've gotta do."

Damian could definitely see her point. Thinking on it would probably only cause issues when the time came to beat the Inverses. "And we need to beat the final boss in order to get out of the game." He stated, reciting their ultimate goal in this place. "Well, might as well get a move on then. Warm up a bit then practice a bit on these low-level glitches." Damian said as he got into a stance that would allow him to dodge or attack as he pleased.

"Alright," she said with a grin, "but I'll only hold back a little, y'hear?"
She spun her katana, loosening her wrists, then darted forward, swinging it loose and fast towards Damian, keeping just enough control that she knew she could keep herself from actually injuring him if he couldn't block in time.

"If you must." Damian said in a exasperated tone but with a playful smile on his face before she swung the katana. He quickly brought the chain up so that he was held between his hands before he held it in a position to block the blade. It managed to do so quite well and he twisted the chain to the side so as to throw the blade off to the side. From there he swept the chain at her feet in an attempt to entangle her ankles and cause her to fall.

She had to give him one thing, he was pretty creative in a fight. He caught the katana and threw it to the side, before entangling her ankles in the chain.
Still, the one thing about fighting with a chain, she thought as she tumbled to the ground, was that you were always attached to what you were fighting.
She rolled onto her back and caught the chain further around her ankles, before yanking forward, trying to pull him off-balance, before kicking the chains off and rolling back to her feet, throwing her momentum into another slice with the sword.

Damian smirked as he managed to catch her around the ankles and throw her to the ground. That is until she rolled onto her back and drew more of the chain around her ankles. In any other circumstance he might have let go but he still had part of the chain coiled around his wrist which yanked him forward. He fell onto his stomach but rolled away with a curse when she put her momentum into another slice with the sword. Of course, that didn't prevent him from being hit with the flat of the blade. "One point, Mako." He told her with a laugh as he got to his feet.

"Hai," she said with a small grin, swirling the katana in the air, taking a ready stance, waiting for his counterattack.

Damian chuckled at her switch in language as he waited for her to get into a ready stance. Once she had he wasted no time at all in flicking the chain towards her wrists, hoping to entangle either them or her sword if he missed.

She rolled to the side, jerking her sword out of the way, then came back up with a grin.
"You aren't going to get me that easily," she told him, then darted in, aiming another strike at him with the flat of her katana.

Damian laughed in amusement, not just at her remark but also because he was thoroughly enjoying this. "We'll see." He said even as he darted out of the way and moved behind Mako. He quickly grabbed the chain in both hands and looped it over her before pulling it tight to try and pin her back against his chest. If he was lucky then the chain would catch her forearms and pin her arms to her body.

Before she knew it, she was pulled tight to Damian, restrained from behind. Her heart was beating faster, no doubt from adrenaline, but it seemed to flutter a little, just a little, as he trapped her arms, not just with the chain, but with his. Like most Americans, he was taller than her, maybe taller even than some Americans, and her head barely topped his chin, making her fit snugly against him.
Maybe another girl might've blushed furiously, but she merely chuckled. "Oh.... it looks like I'm caught," she said with a smirk, glancing coyly up at him, sideways, taking a moment to think a couple of self-indulgent thoughts, before smashing her heel firmly down onto his instep, hard enough to cause pain, but not hard enough to break any bones, hoping to use the momentary distraction to slip out of his hold.

In retrospect this did not seem like such a great idea. When Damian had initially thought of it he did not consider just how snugly she'd fit against him. It also surprised him just how short she was compared to him but for the most part he just did his best to concentrate on keeping her pinned.
That went out the window when the little deviant decided to smile coyly up at him and he gave her a suspicious look even if it caused his heart to skip a beat. "Ok. Baseball, Soccer, Football, Mother Theresa-"
This line of thought was quickly cut off when the pain of her heel coming down on his instep raced up his leg and he gave a pained, startled exclamation and he grimaced in a physical show of that pain.
Damian jerked his foot back in automatic reaction, getting it safely out of the way. He very nearly let go of her, very nearly let her slip out of his grasp. Thankfully he hadn't lost his thought process entirely in the course of the events and this time just wrapped his arms around her instead of the chain. To make sure she couldn't get to his feet again he pulled her up, using his height over her to his advantage. That did leave him open to some very unpleasant counter-attacks but she wouldn't do that.... Would she? "Don't even think about it." He warned her, not wanting to feel that particular pain.

This time, she did flush - first from his actions, and how tightly he was holding her, then second from his statement.
He'd lifted her off of her feet, and aside from the anticipated counterattack, she had no real way to get out of his grip. She wriggled a bit, trying to test his grip, but it was solid.
"Alright," she said, trying to catch her breath. "Alright, you win a point, unless you really do want me to kick you there."

Damian smiled smugly as she wriggled in his grip only to find that he had quite a secure hold on her. Although he did set her down when she gave him the point, her threat only adding as further encouragement. "As the lady wishes." He joked before he returned to his customary spot in this little sparring session. "Alright, tiebreaker?" He asked as he coiled the chain back to its customary length.

SHe chuckled. "Only if you let me go first!" she called playfully as she dropped to the ground and swept a kick at his ankles, hoping to knock him off-balance.

Damian's feet were swept out from under him and he landed on his back with a grunt but he did not hesitate to grab her ankle in a firm grip. "Got you now." He told her with a playful smirk even as he gave a quick yank to pull her off of her feet as well.

She fell to the ground.... then started laughing, almost uncontrollably. What exactly was so funny, she couldn't really, say, but the fact that they were both laying in the dirt, grinning playfully at each other, it just suddenly struck her and she couldn't stop.
"Let's.... let's just..... call this a tie," she suggested between giggles.

When she suggested that they call it a tie Damian laughed and nodded in agreement. "Sounds good to me." He said and pushed himself up. "Should we go check on Leon and Bri or do you have any ideas?" He offered his hand to help her up as he asked this, curious about anything she might have in mind.

She took his hand, her small, delicate, feminine fingers enclosed almost entirely by his larger, thicker, masculine hands as he used his strength to help her to her feet.
She shook her head, then shrugged. "I dunno. Everything in this area's too badass for us to fight, so I guess we could go find someplace else to see if we can't get in some practice, but at this point, there's not much for us to do except head to our fearscapes. Which we don't know where are and can't find. I hear there's a beach,w e could go check it out? It's supposed to be safe during the day."
