Mari awoke next to a fountain dazed. This place was new and different, foreign and scary to her. She sat up, the too loose clothes from the boy who helped her prior to coming her hanging off of her. "Huh, video games. Who knew?" This being her first experience with video games, she didn't quite know what to expect. Mari, using the fountain, lifted herself completely off the ground and stumbled back a step or two. This world felt very false to her, but maybe that was the point. Now her question was how in the world would she get out?
"Huitzilopochtli, what's have I gotten myself into?" She asked, running her fingers through her dark hair. "I should have listened when the boy told me not to touch that... Thing." She sighed in frustration before glancing around the marketplace of the town for any sign of her way back.

"Man, I hate that there's no real healing in this game," Sid griped, stretching so his shoulders cracked. "Well, nothing reliable, anyway. Whos' got time to learn their weird herb system? There's not even any guides!"
Nygus sighed and shook her head. "We'll find some way to make it work, eventually."
"Poor design," he grumped, crossing his arms. "Just what it is. I mean, I'm a simple guy. I want healing that works. That's the kind of man I a-"
He paused and frowned. "Hey, Ny," he said tapping her shoulder. "Look at that girl over there."
"Uh-huh.....?"
The girl he mentioned was a pale-skinned girl with deep black hair, someone who stood out against the surroundings.
"She's jsut standing there. Betcha she's a quest NPC."
"And... how do you know that?" Nygus asked, suppressing a small sigh.
"She's just standing there. She looks different than everyone else. And she looks like she needs help. Woo-hoo, first quest that doesn't require us to go through one of those fear-whatever-majigs! Heyyy!"
He started waving to he girl, and Ny just placed her masked face into one palm, and shook her head with a sigh. "Sid...."
"Yo! Hey!" he called to the pale girl. "How can we be of assistance?"

'Oh! People!' Mari turned excitedly and smiled at the two new strange people. It had surprised the young girl that she could find some potential help so quickly. "Oh! Could you tell me how to get out of here? This is my first time touching one of those video game things and I just kind of wound up here." She gestured to the world around her. "I don't think I like this very much. It's too fake for my liking." Mari said, unaware that she was as trapped as a fly in a spider's web.

Nygus and Sid exchanged glances as the latter walked up to her erstwhile companion. The dark-skinned, bandaged woman raised a single eyebrow at Sid who frowned.
"Not good," she mumbled, and he nodded, turning back to Mari.
"You've never played a video game before?!" he asked, shocked.... and Ny slammed her face into her palm again.
"Sadly," she said, glaring at Sid, "we... can't leave. This... isn't a normal game. We're trapped here. Until we can face our fears, we can't leave."

"Never, not until today. What you're saying though," Her eyes glanced down to the ground, "Face my fears or stay stuck?" She muttered. While she had nowhere necessarily to go back in the regular world, this artificial world was strange and new.
She looked up to the other young woman and was shocked when how the girl looked finally came to Mari's attention. Mari hadn't seen someone like her before, all of the others that she had met before were, well, like her to put simply. "Wow, people look different outside of my tribe." 'Had they spent too much time outside?' She thought, not meaning to be racist. "Um, then we may as well get acquainted. I'm Maritza. Well, um Mari, that's what most people call me anyhow."

"Tribe?" Nygus asked with a frown, but Sid was shaking his head.
"That's a crying shame. And yeah, we're stuck for good until we can beat the final boss. Trust me, most games stay on your TV screen, this is new for both of us. Name's Sid, Sid Barrett, and this is Nygus, well, that's her online name. Her real name is Mira Brown but she likes Nygus better and I just call her Ny. Mari...that's a cool name. Kinda odd, but cool." He put his hand out to shake. "Don't worry, Mari. Ny 'n me are pros at this, so we'll see ya through."

She smiled at Nygus "Yes, my tribe. We're called Tenochtitlan, after an ancient city. I don't know if there are any others like mine though, we never really saw anyone who was from outside of it. If we did, usually it was for them to join with us. Aside from you two, I've only met two others outside of the tribe."
She looked over to Sid as he spoke and while confusion over what a TV is was there, she was happy that two 'pros' as he said were there to help her out. She glanced around to the area and took in how different it was from where she was from which was basically a bunch of tents in the desert. "So, this facing your fear thing? Do they just kind of show up? Like a man just run up to you with a knife or something similar?"

He shook his head. "There's areas outside this city, big wilderness areas full of monsters. Go out far enough, into unmapped territory, and there's whole places the game has made to simulate someone's fears. Find yours and beat it, and you'll get new powers. But they're tough. And they're always based on things you're deeply afraid of. I found one, not even mine, that was full of cut-up dead bodies, and just..." He shuddered.
Nygus chuckled. "He ran away screaming like a little girl."

She chuckled a bit and looked Sid up and down. "Aren't men like you supposed to be tough?" The young woman asked playfully. "Dead bodies aren't that scary anyways, no one is really in there anymore. Just empty vessels. Nothing more."

Ny chuckled and Sid crossed his arms and glared at her sideways. "You haven't seen them when they've been dead for a week," he grumbled. "Or when they get up and start moving around. I mean, do they have zombies where you're from? I'm guessing no. Urgh." He shuddered again, and Nygus sighed.
"Anyway, Mari, why don't you travel with us for a while? We can show you have to fight here, and it'll be safer to travel as a group. We're about to head back out into the wild for a bit."

"Well, usually they are disposed of by then. What sane person would leave a body out for longer than a day? It just asking for all kinds of animals and nasty smells." The girl says nonchalantly. This was an ordinary thing in her custom. "And what are these zombies you speak of? Dead bodies do not move around unless you burn them, although that in itself is terrifying." She stopped speaking for a moment and looked to Nygus.
"I think I will travel with you two though, if you will have me. Safety in numbers after all."

"Zombies are dead bodies animated by evil spirits or contagious diseases that eat your brain, how do you not know that? I mean, you have to be prepared, they're going to start coming after us any day, and they can infect...."
Nygus tuned him out, turning her full attention to Mari, and nodded. "Do you have a weapon?" she asked the girl. "Check to make sure. If you don't, we've made some money from fighting glitches in the desert, we can get you something."

Mari stared blankly at the man as he rambled, all of what he was saying just flying over her head. With that, she turned to Nygus, ignoring Sid.
Mari began to look herself up and down for any kind of weapon that she could use but coming up empty. She frowned and looked to Nygus again "I will pay you back if you help me get a weapon. Even if you just help me find a strong stick, anything will do."

"No problem," Nygus replied. "What kinds of weapons are you familiar with? If any. Or what kind do you want to learn, if none? Also - do you know your class?"

Mari closed her eyes and thought for a bit, trying to recall. She opened her eyes and looked back to Nygus. "I'm strive I think. For weapons though, I used to have mock fights with some friends and I would use these giant branches from trees, I guess something similar to a staff? I would know how to use it at least. Knives would do well to I guess, but I never really learned how to fight with one, just know where to hit with it." How she knew that sort of thing though, that was one thing she did not want to mention. Although they gave her no reason to hide it, mentioning that sort of thing wasn't something you mention in polite company.

"A staff is a good weapon for a balanced fighter," she agreed, then gave Sid a light punch in the arm. "Hey, zombie-head. I'm going to go help Mari here find herself a nice staff. You coming with us, or are you gonna try and build a barricade in the inn room again?"
"Oh, shut up, I thought those glitches were after us!"
"Yeah. Glitches from your nightmare."
"I said shut up, Ny."
"Coming with or not, zombie-head?"
"Ughhhh, fine, fine," he grumbled, "I'll go."
She grinned and clapped him on the back. "Good Sid."

Mari giggled and nodded "You two know this place better than I, lead the way if you please." She still had no idea what to think of these two but they seemed trustworthy at least. That's a start.
"So, what weapons do you two use? Do you have any training in them? Well, from outside of here."

"Well, I use a personal shield," Sid said with a smile. "Fits my personality and my strength; I can bash glitches with it or just sit and brace for punishment. No training with it, at least, not from before. Dunno if weapons like that actually exist or existed previously." He shrugged. "Ny uses a combat knife - and she's been to boot camp, so she knows how to use it."
She grinned. "People say I remind them of a ninja, or they used to, back in the real world," she said. "Sid and I make a real good pair."

"A shield you say? Aren't those more for protection than harm? Don't you need an macahuitl?" She said perplexed. "I mean, I'd prefer to have a shield over a macahuitl if I had to pick one, but still." She allowed that particular conversation to take side stage while she looked over to Nygus. "Also, what is a ninja? A type of fighter? You seem like a fighter."

"Maca-what-el?" Sid asked with a frown. "Yeah, usually you need some kind of weapon, but I use mine for attacking, too. Unusual, but it works."
Ny nodded, putting a hand on one hip. "A ninja is an ancient stealth fighter from Japan. You really don't know a lot about the world, do you?" She smiled, though, shaking her head. "They were very powerful, but they focused on trickery rather than outright power. A good ninja was like a scalpel, a knife - striking only when and where it was needed, precisely. They were used as assassins by ancient warlords and were very very secretive, guarding their techniques jealously from other clans so as to always be one step ahead of others. They were pretty cool, if I do say so myself. I'm not actually a ninja, but I think their way of fighting is a pretty effective one."
